Club Buys Scales for Crippled Children (1966)
Children at the Capper’s Foundation for Crippled Children have a new walk-on scale, thanks to a group of interested women. The Zonta Club of Topeka is responsible for the new convenience at the foundation.
The Zonta Club is a classified service club of about 25 business and professional women. They recently purchased the floor level scale and had it installed at the foundation to solve the problem of aides having to lift children on scales.
Before, aides had to lift children out of wheelchairs, to the scale then back to the wheelchair. With the new type scale children are wheeled directly on the scale and the aide knowing the weight of the wheelchair registers the weight of the child.
The Zonta Club was founded in 1959 by Mrs. Naomi Cessna and was sponsored by the Wichita Zonta Club. Mrs. Lucille Butner is president of the 1966-67 Zonta Club.
The Zonta Club has had as its continuing service project the Capper’s Foundation for Crippled Children. Each year they have given an average of 350 hours of service helping with Capper’s fund raising program of Christmas Seals. In addition to this, the club has purchased and donated several different pieces of equipment such as a stand-up table, walkers and a phonograph, which make the school work easier for the handicapped children. The club is noted for having done more for the foundation than most any other small club.
